Janitor AI is free, and janitor+ is an optional subscription at $12.99 a month or $99 a year that buys more memory, faster replies at busy times, better rerolls and a built-in model Router. It launched on 24 June 2026. It is the first thing Janitor has ever charged for, and nothing was taken away from the free tier to make room for it.
That answers the question most people are actually searching, which is some version of is Janitor AI still free? It is. The rest of this page is about the other question: whether the paid tier is worth it for the way you play.

The Price

The 36% is correct. Twelve months at $12.99 is $155.88, and $99 is 64% of that. Paid yearly, janitor+ works out to $8.25 a month.
Three small print lines from the plan page are worth knowing before you pay: “Usage limits apply. Tax not included. Plans/prices may change.” So the price at checkout can be higher than $12.99 once your local tax is added.
Where you pay matters too. On the web, payments go through Stripe, and Janitor’s help centre says it never sees or stores your card. In the apps, you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, and you need an up-to-date version of the app to see janitor+ at all.

The first line is the important one. The free tier is not a trial and it has no message cap. Janitor’s help centre lists it as “unlimited chats with millions of bots”, “access to standard chat models” and a “context limit of around 9k tokens”.
Janitor’s own promise on the same page is short: “Will the free disappear? No. We will always keep a free option available for everyone.”
What Each Perk Actually Does
5× more context — the one that matters
Context is how much of the conversation the bot can see when it writes a reply. On the free tier that is around 9,000 tokens, and it has to hold the bot’s personality, its scenario, your persona, your chat memory and the recent conversation all at once.
janitor+ gives you five times that. Janitor does not print the resulting number. Five times 9,000 is about 45,000 tokens — that is our arithmetic, not their figure.
In practice this is the difference between a bot that loses the thread after a long evening and one that still has most of it. Everything that sits in the prompt permanently (personality, scenario, persona, chat memory) costs the same number of tokens on both plans, but on janitor+ it comes out of a budget five times bigger, so there is much more room left for the story itself. One thing it does not do: it does not make the bot smarter about what to remember. It just lets it see more.
Priority routing — faster only when it is busy
The plan page promises “priority routing for faster replies when it’s busy”. The launch post called it “unlimited priority messages, giving you faster responses even when usage is high”.
Read the condition carefully. When Janitor is quiet, free and paid replies arrive at about the same speed. The benefit shows up at peak hours, when free traffic slows down.
It is not a guarantee, either. On 16 August 2026 Janitor’s changelog reported that “some plus subscribers had much slower generations than expected” for part of a day, after a problem while moving plus traffic between GPU providers. It was fixed the same day, and Janitor said no chats or subscriptions were affected — but it is a fair reminder that priority means a separate lane, not a different internet.
Enhanced swipes — better rerolls, in a monthly allowance
A swipe is a reroll: you ask the bot for another version of its last reply. janitor+ includes a monthly allowance of enhanced swipes, which the launch post describes as regenerating responses “using our most powerful models and additional compute for noticeably better rerolls”.
Janitor does not publish how many you get. The launch post says “generous”, the plan page says “monthly”. Since July you can see how many you have left in your API settings, in the janitor+ section.
Ordinary swipes stay unlimited on both plans. The allowance only applies to the stronger ones.
The janitor+ Router — other models, without a proxy
The Router arrived on 30 July 2026, and it is the perk that changes the most for people who already use outside models.
Until then, using a model like DeepSeek or Claude on Janitor meant setting up a proxy: an account with a provider, an API key, a base URL, and an exact model name. The Router puts all of that inside Janitor. Its help-centre article lists what it does:
- No proxy, no API key. You pick a model from a list in your settings.
- Prices shown first. The per-token cost of each model is shown before you chat, next to its context limit.
- A built-in wallet. You add money, track your balance and see your billing inside Janitor.
- A discount. janitor+ subscribers get 10% off some of the most popular models.
- A $5 signup credit for janitor+ subscribers, which expires one year after you claim it.
Four limits matter:
- It is janitor+ only. You cannot use the Router on the free tier.
- It is web only for now. Janitor says mobile support is planned.
- It is billed on top of the subscription. The Router has no fee of its own, but every message is paid per token from your wallet. The $12.99 does not include model usage beyond the $5 credit.
- Credits are non-refundable, except where the law requires it. And if your balance runs out mid-chat, the message in progress may complete, but you cannot send another until you top up.
Janitor is also clear that the Router is not a replacement for its own model: “For everyday roleplay and conversation, JLLM+ is still the recommended chat model. Router exists to give you additional options.”
The cosmetics
Since launch janitor+ has picked up a set of visible extras: a gold username and checkmark (24 June), emoji reactions on comments (24 June), a profile customization page with a custom username colour and a badge you can hide (1 July), and GIFs and stickers in comments on the web (21 July).
None of them changes how a chat plays. They are there so people can see you support the site, and they are the least important reason to subscribe.
Features That Started on janitor+ and Became Free
One pattern is worth knowing, because it tells you what janitor+ is not.
On 26 June 2026 Janitor gave janitor+ users an early preview of jllm-short, a model tuned for shorter, faster-paced replies. On 15 July it was released to everyone: “This feature was previously only available to Janitor+ subscribers, but has now been rolled out to all users.” Replies are on average 70% shorter than standard.
So janitor+ can mean early access to a feature rather than permanent exclusive access. If one specific new feature is your reason to subscribe, it may reach the free tier later anyway.
”Is Janitor AI Not Free Anymore?”
This is one of the most common searches around Janitor, and the answer is no. But there are three real reasons people ask, and none of them is a price on Janitor itself.
1. Free third-party models change, and the errors show up inside Janitor. Many people use Janitor with an outside model through a proxy, often a free or cheap one. Those free allowances belong to the provider, not to Janitor. When a provider cuts its free tier, adds rate limits or starts charging, the error appears in your Janitor chat and it looks like Janitor has started charging. It has not. Janitor’s own help article on rate-limit errors starts from exactly this: the issue “often arises from proxy-related problems with services like DeepSeek or Claude”. 2. janitor+ exists now. Since June there is a paid option, and paywall-style upgrade prompts make some people assume the free tier has been cut. It has not: free is still unlimited chats on Janitor’s standard model.
3. Age checks in some countries. Users connecting from the UK, Brazil and Australia have to verify their age to keep chatting, because of new laws in those countries. That is a check, not a charge — it is free and it is required whether or not you pay. Janitor uses the provider k-ID, and its announcement says it only receives a yes-or-no answer on whether you are over 18. There is more on this in is Janitor AI safe.
Janitor’s own explanation for why the site can stay free is in its launch post: janitor+ is “priced to hopefully break even”, and the money buys GPUs for extra capacity. The note from Janitor’s founder on the plan page says the same thing in plainer words: “the free version is not going anywhere. it stays free, and it keeps getting better.” We cannot promise what any company will do next year. What we can say is that the free tier has not shrunk since janitor+ launched.
janitor+ or Your Own Proxy?
This is the real decision for experienced users, and it is easy to get wrong because the two are not the same kind of thing.
- janitor+ improves Janitor’s own model: more context, faster at busy times, stronger rerolls. A flat $12.99 a month.
- A proxy replaces Janitor’s model with a different model that you pay for per message, at the provider’s prices. Janitor charges nothing for this, on either plan.
- The Router is a proxy that lives inside Janitor. It needs janitor+, and it is still paid per token on top.
So the honest questions are:
Do you like how Janitor’s own model writes? If yes, janitor+ is the upgrade that matters, and the context increase is most of its value.
Do you already run a proxy you are happy with? Then janitor+ adds little to your chats. Your model’s context and quality come from your provider, not from janitor+. The Router’s convenience and 10% discount are real, but they do not replace a setup that already works. Janitor itself says the Router “is offered as an alternative to proxy setups, not as a forced migration”.
Did you give up on proxies because the setup was too fiddly? That is who the Router is for. You pay the subscription plus per-token usage, and you never touch a base URL or an API key.
How to Cancel, and What Happens to Refunds
On the web: Settings → Billing → Manage Subscription. You are sent to Stripe’s billing page, where you can cancel at any time.
In the app: cancel in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Janitor’s help centre warns: “App-based subscriptions cannot be canceled from the web.” If you subscribed on your phone, the website’s billing page cannot stop it.
What happens next: the subscription stays active until the end of the period you already paid for, then your account moves back to the free tier. Your chats and bots stay where they are.
Refunds: Janitor says subscriptions are “generally non-refundable, except where required by our Terms of Service or applicable law”. Router credits are non-refundable on the same terms. For billing problems, Janitor’s help centre gives a dedicated address — [email protected] — and asks you to include the email on your account.
