Janitor AI App (2026): Is There an Official One, Where to Get It, and How It Differs From the Website
Yes, Janitor AI has an official app. It is available for iPhone and Android, it is free, and in both stores it is listed as “Janitor: Interactive Stories”. It opened to everyone as a public beta on 7 February 2026.
That store name is the first thing to know, because a search for “Janitor AI” does not show an app with exactly that name. The second is that the app does not behave like the website when you first open it. It starts in a restricted mode, and the switch that changes this is not in the app.
We read both store listings on 4 October 2026, together with Janitor’s help centre and every changelog entry about the app. We did not test the app ourselves. Where this page says what the app does, the source is Janitor or the store, and we name it.

How to Find the Real App
For a long time there was no official Janitor app, and other apps used the name. On 4 February 2026, three days before launch, Janitor published a warning:
“There are fake apps using our name on the app stores right now. these are not us. do not download them. we cannot verify what these apps do with your data or account information.”
So do not search the store and pick the first result. Use one of these routes:
- Open janitorai.com on your phone and use its app link. Janitor’s launch post says the address
janitorai.com/app-downloadsends you to the right store. - Open Janitor’s help centre article “FAQ: JanitorAI App”. It has one link for iOS and one for Android, and it states: “These are the only official JanitorAI apps.”
Then check what you landed on:
| App Store (iPhone, iPad) | Google Play (Android) | |
|---|---|---|
| App name | Janitor: Interactive Stories | Janitor: Interactive Stories |
| Seller or developer | JanitorAI, INC | janitorai |
| App ID | 6692609366 | com.janitor.ai |
A small detail: Janitor’s launch post said the publisher would read “Janitor AI Inc”. The listings today show the two spellings in the table. The app ID is the more reliable check. It is in the store address, and it matches the links in Janitor’s own announcement.
If you installed a different “Janitor” app before February 2026, Janitor’s advice was to delete it and, if you had typed your login into it, change your password on the website.

| Category | Books | not read |
| Language | English | not read |
| In-app purchases | not read | $12.99 per item |
| Advertising label | none | none |
Three notes on that table.
The app is not limited to the United States. We also looked up the App Store listing for the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Turkey. It was present in all thirteen.
The listing is English only. The App Store lists one language. If you chat in another language, that is a matter for the model and not for the app, but the menus are in English.
Google Play publishes a data summary. The developer states that no data is shared with third parties, that the app may collect personal info, app activity and two other kinds of data, that data is encrypted in transit, and that you can request deletion. Those are the developer’s own statements to Google. For the wider privacy picture, see Is Janitor AI safe?.
The App Starts in Restricted Mode
This is the difference that confuses most new app users. You install the app, log in with your usual account, and a character you chatted with yesterday is missing, or its replies are different.
Janitor explains it openly. Apple and Google have content rules for apps, and to stay in the stores the app applies stricter filtering by default. Janitor’s post on mobile moderation lists what restricted mode does:
- characters with higher content scores are blocked entirely;
- character definitions (personality, scenario, first message) are hidden;
- names and descriptions are filtered for certain terms;
- only approved images appear in descriptions;
- search results leave out more content.
The help centre adds that in this mode the model is tuned to give safe-for-work replies, and that messages are checked for certain keywords. If your message or recent chat history does not fit the mobile rules, you see a notice that explains how to change your settings.
You cannot change this inside the app. Janitor says that is an app store rule. The steps, from the help centre article updated on 27 June 2026:
- Open a web browser and go to janitorai.com. A phone browser is fine.
- Log in with the same account you use in the app.
- Open your profile, then Settings, then the Privacy & Display tab.
- Turn on the switch labelled “Enable NSFW on Mobile”.
- Close the app completely and open it again.
After that, the help centre says, the app “will function exactly like the website”.
Two things stay the same in both modes. Links in the app are only clickable when they lead to approved community sites such as Discord or X. And content that breaks Janitor’s rules is filtered everywhere, on the app and on the website.
If you changed the switch and nothing happened: this was a real bug, fixed twice. On 7 February 2026 Janitor fixed a case where the setting did not reach the app until the login session expired. On 31 March 2026 it fixed a second case where the app held an older login token and still showed “content not available”. If you see it today, check that both sides use the same account, then fully close the app and reopen it.
The setting only affects the app. Janitor states that the website is unchanged by it.
App or Website: What Is Different
Janitor’s launch post set the goal: “right now were focused on feature parity with the website. theres still stuff on web that isnt in the app yet.” Eight months later, the changelog shows the pattern clearly. New features arrive on the web first.
| Feature | On the web | In the app, according to Janitor |
|---|---|---|
| jllm-short preview model | 26 June 2026 | ”coming to the app shortly” |
| janitor+ Router | 30 July 2026 | ”coming to the mobile app soon" |
| "Memory replaces old messages” switch | 19 August 2026 | ”web only until the next app update” |
| Optional autoscroll | 4 June 2026 | ”on future releases” |
| Cloning a persona, no limit on personas | 23 June 2026 | The entries say “on web” |
| Public chats, switching persona in a chat | 31 March 2026 | Needs an updated app |
| janitor+ subscription | 24 June 2026 | Needs an updated app |
We could not confirm which of these have reached the app since those notes were written. The table shows the order of release, and the order has been the same each time.
What the app has that the website does not, according to the help centre: push notifications and haptic feedback.
What works the same: your account, your chats, your personas and your settings for outside models. Since 21 May 2026 the app groups API Settings, Generation Settings and Generation Rules under one menu called Model Settings. If you use a proxy, that is where to look. What each slider does is covered in Janitor AI generation settings.
Which should you use?
- Use the app if you chat mainly on a phone and want notifications when a reply arrives.
- Use the website if you want new features on the day they are released, if you make bots, or if you edit long prompts. Those jobs are easier with a keyboard.
- Use both freely. They share one account, and the mobile content switch is on the website in any case.
What Changed in Version 2.6.0
Janitor’s changelog announced version 2.6.0 on 1 October 2026. Both store listings carry the same notes:
- a new home screen with search built in, and the creators you follow;
- reworked settings: privacy and display, sign-in methods, active sessions and creator verification;
- Daylight, a new light theme;
- an option to hide the tab bar while you scroll;
- bug fixes and performance improvements.
Before that, the app’s history is mostly repairs: a fix for chat text running off the screen on iOS (June 2026), a fix for the app hanging between messages (May 2026), and a fix for the “continue” button (May 2026).
Subscriptions in the App
Janitor’s paid plan is janitor+. You need a recent version of the app to see it at all: the launch post for janitor+ says “you’ll need to update the app to access janitor+”.
In the app, you pay through the App Store or Google Play, not through Janitor’s own payment page. That has one practical result, stated in Janitor’s subscription FAQ:
“App-based subscriptions cannot be canceled from the web.”
If you subscribed on your phone, cancel in the store’s subscription settings. The website’s billing page cannot stop it.
Google Play lists the app’s in-app purchases at $12.99 per item, which matches the monthly price on the website. We did not see the in-app purchase screen ourselves. Prices, the yearly plan and what the subscription includes are in Janitor AI pricing.
Is There an APK?
Not from Janitor. Its launch post, its fake-app warning and its help centre all point to two places only: the App Store and Google Play. The help centre calls them “the only official JanitorAI apps”.
Sites that offer a “Janitor AI APK” are offering a file that Janitor did not publish there. You would be installing it outside the store’s checks and then typing your Janitor login into it. We do not recommend it and we will not link to one.
If Google Play says the app is not available for your device, the usual cause is the Android version. The listing requires Android 7.0 or later. In that case, use the website in your phone’s browser. It works in any modern phone browser, and it is where new features arrive first.
When the App Does Not Work
Most of these steps come from Janitor’s own fix notes.
| What happens | What to try |
|---|---|
| Content is missing or a chat says it is not available | Restricted mode. See the section above |
| The app crashes, hangs, or shows text off the screen | Close it completely and reopen it. Then update it in your store |
| A fix was announced but you do not have it | Fully quit and reopen. Janitor delivers some fixes as a “codepush” that loads at the next start |
| ”401 Unauthorized”, or you are logged out again and again | Log out and log in again. Janitor’s help page says this error is usually a problem with the login session |
| Nothing loads at all | Check status.janitorai.com. If the service is down, the app is down too |
| A new feature from the changelog is not there | It may be on the web only for now. Update the app, then check the website |
| A bug that stays after all of this | Report it in the help centre or at [email protected] |
Janitor also advised, at launch, turning on automatic updates for the app in your store settings. With an app that is still labelled a beta and updated this often, that is good advice.
Problems that are not specific to the app, such as proxy errors, a slow queue or replies that stop, are covered in Janitor AI not working.
If You Wanted a Different Kind of App
The app is a way to use Janitor on a phone. It is the same service: characters made by the community, and a chat. If what you wanted was a game on your phone, with rules, dice and a world that keeps track of things, that is a different kind of product. Our list of AI RPG apps covers those, and Janitor AI alternatives covers services of the same kind as Janitor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Janitor AI have an app?
Yes. Janitor AI has an official app for iPhone and Android. It opened as a public beta on 7 February 2026. In both stores it is listed under the name Janitor: Interactive Stories, and Janitor’s help centre says the App Store and Google Play versions are the only official Janitor AI apps.
Is the Janitor AI app real or fake?
The real one is called Janitor: Interactive Stories. On the App Store the seller is JanitorAI, INC, and on Google Play the developer is janitorai with the app ID com.janitor.ai. Janitor warned about fake apps using its name in February 2026. The safest way to reach the real app is the download link on janitorai.com or in Janitor’s help centre.
Is the Janitor AI app free?
Yes. The app is free to download and use, and neither store listing carries an advertising label. Google Play lists in-app purchases at $12.99 per item, which matches the monthly price of the janitor+ subscription. A subscription bought in the app is managed and cancelled in the store, not on the website.
Why is content missing in the Janitor AI app?
The app starts in a restricted mode because of App Store and Google Play rules. In that mode some characters are blocked or hidden from search, character definitions are hidden, and replies are tuned to stay safe for work. To change it, log in on janitorai.com in a browser, open Settings, go to Privacy and Display, turn on the mobile content switch, then close and reopen the app. It cannot be changed inside the app.
Is the Janitor AI app better than the website?
It depends on what you need. The app adds push notifications and haptic feedback and is built for a phone screen. The website gets new features first: Janitor has released several features on the web with a note that they will come to the app later. If you want every feature on the day it is released, use the website. If you mostly chat on a phone, use the app.
Is there a Janitor AI APK?
Janitor does not offer an APK file. Its announcements and help centre link only to the App Store and Google Play. An APK from another site is not something Janitor can vouch for, and you would be typing your account login into it. On Android, install from Google Play.
What do I need to run the Janitor AI app?
On iPhone or iPad, iOS 15.5 or later and about 111 MB of space. On Android, version 7.0 or later. Both stores rate the app 17+. You also need an internet connection, because the model runs on a server and not on your phone.
Why does the Janitor AI app keep crashing or logging me out?
Start with the steps Janitor itself gives. Close the app completely and open it again, because some fixes are delivered when the app restarts. Update to the latest version in your store. Check status.janitorai.com to see whether the service is down. If you see a 401 Unauthorized message, log out and log in again. If the problem stays, report it through the help centre or [email protected].
