AI Dungeon vs Perchance (2026): Which Free AI Text Adventure Should You Play?

AI Dungeon and Perchance are the two places most people land when they want a free AI text adventure, and the short answer is that AI Dungeon is the better game while Perchance is the faster start.

Both let you type anything and get a story back. Both are free to play for as long as you like. The difference is in everything around the text box: accounts, saved games, memory tools, a library of worlds, and who keeps the rules.

One thing has to be clear before any comparison. “Perchance” is not one product. It is a site full of small pages made by its users, and two of them matter here:

  • AI Character Chat is the one most people mean. You write a character and talk to it. This is the page we reviewed and scored.
  • AI RPG is a text adventure page at perchance.org/ai-rpg. Its own description says it is “kinda like AI Dungeon”. This is the real rival, and we have read its code for our guide to it, but we have not scored it.

This page uses both. The scores below are for AI Character Chat. Most of the practical comparison is with AI RPG, since that is the page a person choosing between these two will actually play.

What Each One Is

AI Dungeon is a game made by Latitude, and it is the product that started this category in 2019. You pick a scenario or start from nothing, choose a model, and play a story in any genre. It has no dice and no character sheet unless a scenario’s author scripts them in. What it has is a set of tools for telling the AI what to keep in mind, and a library of worlds that other players wrote. It runs in a browser and as a phone app. Our review covers it in full.

Perchance AI RPG is one web page. There is a box for an overview of your adventure, a story text, and a box for your next action. It uses the AI text service that every Perchance page shares. We read the page’s code for our guide, and the important finding was this: there is no dice roller behind the narration, no character sheet that the program checks, and no combat rules. Your hit points are words in a text box that the AI is asked to respect.

That is not a weakness next to AI Dungeon, since AI Dungeon works the same way at its core. On both, you run the rules and the AI runs the world. The comparison is about what each one gives you to do that job.

Free Play: Both Are Free, in Different Ways

Neither of these rations your turns. That was not always true of AI Dungeon, and many older answers online still describe an energy system that is gone.

Perchance is free with nothing to buy. There is no tier, no paywall and no message cap. It shows ads. The cost you pay is in speed: the AI behind the page is one shared service for the whole site, and it slows down when many people are using it.

AI Dungeon’s free tier is called Wanderer. Latitude’s help centre says: “AI Dungeon is a free-to-play game, no matter what device you’re playing on”. On 2 October 2026 its membership page listed nine story models on the free tier, and a Memory Bank of 25 memories for each adventure.

What AI Dungeon sells is not more play. It sells a wider view of your own story:

From AI Dungeon’s membership page, read on 2 October 2026. Our membership guide has the context for every model on every tier.

Context is how much text the AI can read when it writes the next reply. A token is a piece of a word, and 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 words. So the free tier’s 4k is about 3,000 words of story, instructions and notes together. Three of the free models get less: Madness, Hearthfire and Harbinger have 2k on the free tier, and DeepSeek V4 Flash has 3k.

That number is the honest limit of free AI Dungeon. You can play all night, but the AI is reading only the last few pages. Everything older has to reach it through the memory tools.

Memory: More Tools Against a Memory You Can See

This is the axis that decides whether a story lasts, and the two take different roads.

AI Dungeon scores Memory & Continuity — 3. It gives you four separate tools, each with its own job:

  • Plot Essentials holds what is always true: your character, the setting, the main goal. It is sent on every turn.
  • Story Cards hold notes about people, places and things. A card is only sent when one of its trigger words appears in the story.
  • Author’s Note is a short reminder placed right before your latest action.
  • The Memory Bank stores memories of what has happened. It gets about a quarter of the space that is left after the fixed boxes above.

You can also press the last response and choose View Context to see exactly what the AI was sent. That is rare, and it is the single best way to learn why a story forgot something. Our guides to AI Instructions, Plot Essentials and Author’s Note and to Story Cards explain how to use each one.

The catch on the free tier is space. Every word in those boxes is taken out of the same small context your story lives in.

Perchance’s character chat scores Memory & Continuity — 2. In our review it lost details faster and less predictably than a dedicated platform.

Perchance AI RPG handles memory in a way that is simple and easy to see. From the code:

  1. When the adventure text passes about 88% of what the model can comfortably read, the page starts summarising in the background.
  2. It takes a block of older paragraphs, about 1,500 characters at a time, and asks the AI for a summary of roughly half the length.
  3. The summary is written into the story as a special paragraph, and the AI is sent the summary in place of the paragraphs it covers.
  4. When there are many summaries, they are summarised again.

The page tells you this itself: “Feel free to edit the content of these summaries, but don’t move or delete them. They help extend the AI’s memory.”

So on Perchance AI RPG, the memory is in front of you. If a summary dropped a fact you need, you type the fact back in. Each round of summarising halves the detail, so something from the first hour of a long game has been shortened several times. Facts that must survive go in the overview box or the info tracker, which are never summarised.

Which is better? AI Dungeon gives you more control, and it is the one we have tested and scored higher. Perchance AI RPG asks less of you: it does one sensible thing on its own and shows you the result. A player who will never open a settings panel may get further on Perchance than on free AI Dungeon. A player who will spend ten minutes on Plot Essentials and a few Story Cards will get further on AI Dungeon.

For why every AI game has this limit at all, see why LLMs forget.

Freedom, and Who Keeps the Rules

AI Dungeon scores Player Agency — 4, one of the highest on our board. Type something absurd and it goes with you. Its reputation was built on strange stories that no designer planned.

Perchance’s character chat scores Player Agency — 2. But AI RPG is a different page with a different instruction, and that instruction is public. Among the standing tips sent with every request:

  • “Let the player carve their own path. DO NOT railroad them into a specific story.”
  • “The Game Master only simulates the world, not the player”.

The page also cuts each reply at a set point, which its author’s note describes as a way to keep the AI from writing anything other than the result of your action. We have not scored AI RPG, so we will not put a number on it. The intent is the same as AI Dungeon’s: you act, the world answers.

Both score Determinism & Fairness — 2, and for the same reason. When a storyteller with no rules decides whether your sword blow lands, it tends to decide in your favour. Success starts to feel like the game agreeing with you.

Here Perchance AI RPG has two small tools that AI Dungeon does not give you out of the box:

  • Hard mode adds one line to the instruction: “DIFFICULTY_LEVEL: VERY HARD (permadeath; highly realistic consequences; strict adherence to reality; player CANNOT take impossible actions)”. It is only a sentence, and nothing stops you from playing on after your character dies. It still changes the tone of a game more than you would expect.
  • Dice in a shortcut button. If you write {1-20} in a shortcut, the page replaces it with a random number from 1 to 20. That is a real roll the AI did not choose.

AI Dungeon has no dice built in. A scenario’s author can add mechanics with scripting, and some do, but that is work most players will never do themselves. On Mechanical Depth, AI Dungeon scores 2 and Perchance’s chat scores 1. Neither is a rules engine. If you want the game to keep the rules for you, our guide to choosing an AI RPG by what matters to you lists the platforms that do.

Saves: The Difference That Costs People Their Games

This is the part to read before you start a long story on Perchance.

Perchance AI RPG keeps your adventures in your browser. The page says so in plain words: “Your adventures are not stored on a server. They’re stored privately in your browser/device storage only. Export/backup your adventures often using the export button in the adventures panel.”

That means:

  • On another device or another browser, your adventures are not there.
  • A private or incognito window forgets them when it closes.
  • If you clear the site’s data, they are gone.

The page gives you an export button, which saves all your adventures to a file or to a temporary link that lasts three days. To move a game from a computer to a phone, you export on one and import on the other. It works, and it is a step you have to remember to take.

AI Dungeon keeps your adventures with your account. You sign in on a phone and the story you started on a computer is there.

There is a second side to this. Because Perchance does not keep a copy of your saved adventure, there is no account holding your stories. The text you send for each reply still goes to Perchance’s AI service to be answered. Players who care about who holds their stories will want to read our data custody audit.

Worlds, Models and Friends

Worlds. AI Dungeon has a library of scenarios written by other players, and pressing Play on one starts your own adventure from it. This is its biggest practical lead. A good scenario arrives with its Plot Essentials and Story Cards already written. If you want to write one, see how to create an AI Dungeon scenario. Perchance AI RPG has no library on the page. What it has is copies: anyone can edit the page’s instruction and save a version with its own address, and the page points to a template for building a game with a fixed world. Your saved adventures are kept per page, so an adventure made on a copy is not in the list on the original.

Models. AI Dungeon lets you choose, and the choice changes the writing a great deal. Our guide to AI Dungeon’s models compares them. Perchance gives you one model and no setting for it.

Friends. AI Dungeon has a multiplayer mode. The host opens the Play menu, selects Multiplayer, creates a game and shares an eight-digit join code. Our multiplayer guide has the steps. Perchance AI RPG’s share button makes a link to a copy of your adventure. A friend can continue it in their own browser, on their own branch. There is no session where two people play the same story at once.

Mature content. Both allow dark and violent stories. Perchance AI RPG’s instruction says such themes are allowed in scenarios with mature themes, and the page has a moderation step that can refuse a reply. AI Dungeon rates scenarios when they are published.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose AI Dungeon if:

  • You want to come back to the same story next week, on any device.
  • You want to start in a world that someone else already built.
  • You are willing to spend a few minutes on Plot Essentials and Story Cards.
  • You want to choose your model, or play with friends.

Choose Perchance AI RPG if:

  • You want to be playing in one minute, with no account.
  • You want one short adventure tonight, and you do not mind if it stays on this device.
  • You like seeing and editing the AI’s memory directly.
  • You want a quick random dice roll without learning to script.

Choose Perchance AI Character Chat if what you want is not an adventure at all, but a conversation with one character. Our Perchance AI chat guide covers that page.

Many players will use both. Perchance is a good place to try an idea for a character or a world. When the idea is worth keeping, AI Dungeon is the better place to keep it.

If Neither One Fits

Both of these are stories with no rules underneath. That is what they are for, and it is also their limit. Neither scores above 3 on Memory, and neither scores above 2 on Mechanical Depth or Fairness.

If you want a world that tracks what you own, makes you earn what you get, and remembers a campaign over many sessions, look at our ranking for long campaigns. If you want to stay free, free AI roleplay lists the other places to play at no cost, and AI Dungeon alternatives covers the wider field.

Checklist

  • Decide first: do you want to keep this story? If yes, AI Dungeon.
  • On Perchance AI RPG, export your adventures before you clear your browser or change device.
  • On free AI Dungeon, keep Plot Essentials short. The context is about 3,000 words in total.
  • On AI Dungeon, use View Context when the story forgets something.
  • On Perchance AI RPG, put facts that must last in the overview or the info tracker.
  • For harder outcomes on Perchance AI RPG, turn on Hard mode and make a {1-20} shortcut.
  • If you want real rules, real dice and a real character sheet, neither of these is the answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI Dungeon or Perchance better?

AI Dungeon is the better game and Perchance is the faster start. On our seven-axis methodology AI Dungeon scores 2.6 and Perchance scores 1.4, and AI Dungeon is ahead or level on every axis. That Perchance score is for AI Character Chat, its most used page. Perchance also has a separate text adventure page called AI RPG, which is much closer to AI Dungeon and which we have not scored. If you want a story you can come back to next week, with tools that keep it on track, choose AI Dungeon. If you want to be playing in one minute with no account, choose Perchance AI RPG.

Is Perchance AI RPG the same thing as AI Dungeon?

It is the same kind of product, made much smaller. Perchance’s own description of the page says it is an interactive AI story or game, kinda like AI Dungeon. Both show you a story text and a box for your next action, and a model writes what happens. The differences are around that core. AI Dungeon has accounts, a library of scenarios written by other players, a choice of models, Story Cards, a Memory Bank and multiplayer. Perchance AI RPG has one model, no account, no library, and saves that stay in your browser.

Which one is really free?

Both are, and neither rations your turns. Perchance has no paid tier at all and is paid for by ads. AI Dungeon’s free tier, called Wanderer, has no energy system and no turn limit, and it includes nine story models. What AI Dungeon sells is not more play. Its memberships, from $14.99 to $99.99 a month, buy more models and a larger context, which is how much of your story the AI can read at once.

Which has the better memory, AI Dungeon or Perchance?

AI Dungeon, on our scores: 3 on Memory and Continuity against 2 for Perchance’s character chat. AI Dungeon gives you more tools, with Story Cards, Plot Essentials, an Author’s Note and a Memory Bank, and it lets you view exactly what the AI received. Perchance AI RPG does one thing that is easier to see: when a story gets long it writes summary paragraphs into the story text itself, and you can read and correct them. On the free tier AI Dungeon’s context is small, about 4,000 tokens on most models, so its tools matter more than its raw memory.

Will I lose my story on Perchance?

You can, and this is the biggest practical difference between the two. Perchance AI RPG keeps your adventures in the storage of the browser you played in. They are not on a server. If you clear the site data, use a private window, or open the page on another device, they are not there. The page has an export button and tells you to use it often. AI Dungeon keeps your adventures with your account, so they follow you from a computer to a phone.

Can I play with friends on AI Dungeon or Perchance?

AI Dungeon has a multiplayer mode, started from the Play menu and joined with an eight-digit code. Perchance AI RPG has no shared session. Its share button makes a link to a copy of the adventure as it stood when you made the link. A friend who opens it can continue the story in their own browser, and nothing they do comes back to you.

Which is better for a beginner?

Perchance AI RPG is the easier first five minutes, because there is nothing to set up: you open the page, write a few lines or leave the box empty, and press begin. AI Dungeon is the easier first month. Its scenario library gives you a world someone else already built, and its tools let a story last longer than one sitting. Many players would do well to try the idea on Perchance and move to AI Dungeon when they want to keep a story.

Both platforms are scored on Arcanum’s seven-axis methodology; the axis values quoted here are the published scores on each platform’s entry as of 8 October 2026. The Perchance score is for AI Character Chat; the AI RPG page is described from its public code and is not scored. AI Dungeon and Perchance are third-party platforms, neither holds a commercial relationship with Arcanum, and this publication is independent and unpaid; all names are used nominatively.
