Character.AI Memory: What Is Protected, What Gets Compressed, and What Each Plan Gets (2026)
On Character.AI, only two things are safe in a long chat: what you pin, and what you write into Story Memory. Everything else — the conversation itself, and even the automatic memories — can be shortened or dropped as the chat grows.
Character.AI says this itself, in its May 2026 memory announcement: as chats stretch on, “Memory tidies older context in the background and keeps what matters”, while “anything you’ve written into Story Memory or pinned yourself is protected. It stays put no matter how full the bar gets.”
That is the most useful sentence the company has published about memory, and it is the rule this guide is built on. The rest is detail: which tools exist, which plan gets how much of each, and a handful of small limits that look like bugs.
It also helps to know that Character.AI has rebuilt its memory about five times since the start of 2024, and its help centre was never cleaned up afterwards. Articles from each version are still live, and they disagree with each other. If a guide online tells you something about Character.AI memory, check which version it describes.

The help centre still carries the older layers as if they were current:
- The Pinned Memories article still says you can pin 5 messages per chat. The c.ai lite plan page, updated in September 2026, says free accounts get 15 pins.
- The Creator Guide (section 6, updated the day this guide was written) still describes “a 400-character Chat Memories field” and “auto-memories for (c.ai+) subscribers” — the 2025 tools.
- The Creator Guide’s troubleshooting section still says Lorebook and memory visualisation are “on the way”. Both have launched.
None of this is hidden or dishonest. It is a help centre that was added to and never tidied. But it means the right answer to most memory questions is “the May 2026 system”, and most older advice is about something that has since been replaced.
How Memory Works Now
Open it from the notebook icon in the chat header, or from the chat menu. Everything below lives on that one Memory screen.
Story Memory — yours, and protected
Story Memory is “a home for everything you want your Character to hold onto”: backstory, key events, special moments. You can type into it, or long-press a message and tap Pin to lock that message in “exactly as it landed”. It is available to every user, free.
This is the part the rule protects. Story Memory and pinned messages “stay put no matter how full the bar gets”. If something must survive a long chat, it goes here.
Facts — automatic, and c.ai+ only
Facts picks up details as you chat and saves them by itself: appearance, quirks, relationships, hobbies. It has separate tabs for your Persona, the character and side characters who come up. You can add your own Facts, edit the ones it captured, switch them off, or remove side characters you do not want saved.
Two things to know. Facts is a c.ai+ feature. And when you start a new chat with the same character, c.ai+ offers to copy Facts into the new chat, so what the character learned about you carries over. Without that, a new chat starts from nothing.
Memory Usage — the bar
Memory Usage shows what is filling the chat’s memory — Facts, Story Memories, message history — and warns you when you are running low. Free accounts get a simple version. c.ai lite and c.ai+ get the detailed breakdown.
The part nobody controls
Behind all of this, the chat itself keeps growing, and at some point it no longer fits. Character.AI’s answer is automatic: memory “tidies older context in the background and keeps what matters”. In April 2026 the company described this as “smarter Memory compression under the hood, so important details don’t get lost”.
That is a sensible design, but it means what “matters” is decided by the system, not by you, and older parts of the chat are compressed rather than kept word for word. The only way to take that decision back is to pin it or write it into Story Memory.

So the honest summary is that paying now buys memory on Character.AI — more pins, automatic Facts and carry-over between chats. That was not true when we first reviewed the platform, and our Character.AI entry now says so.
The chat style you use matters too. Character.AI says PipSqueak 2, the free style since May 2026, is “better at holding onto details you’ve established earlier in a chat”. The premium styles are DeepSqueak and LongSqueak. On lite, when the daily premium allowance runs out, the chat carries on in the free style — the same chat, but a different model reading it, which can feel like the character suddenly forgot something.
The Small Limits That Look Like Bugs
These come from the app’s own messages. Each one is a rule, not a fault.
You cannot pin the newest message. If you try to pin the character’s latest reply, the app tells you to send another message first. The app does not say why, but the likely reason is that the latest reply can still be swiped and replaced. Reply once, then pin it.
You cannot edit a pinned message. The app asks you to unpin it first. Pinned text is meant to stay exactly as it was — that is what protects it — so editing it means unpinning, editing, then pinning again.
You can run out of pins. When you reach the limit, the app says you have hit the maximum number of pinned memories. On free that is 15 per chat. Unpin something that no longer matters, or move the important part into Story Memory as a short written note.
Messages in group chats cannot be edited at all. The app says so directly. Group chats are covered in Character.AI group chat.
Memory belongs to one chat. A new chat with the same character starts empty. Only c.ai+ can copy Facts across. On free, copy your Story Memory notes by hand if you want them in the new chat.
Writing Memory That Works
Story Memory is where you have the most control, so it is worth using well. The advice Character.AI gave for its older 400-character box still applies to the new one: keep it short, be specific about routines, relationships and preferences, and use “clear, direct language”.
Some practical rules on top of that:
- Write facts, not scenes. “Mara broke her left arm in the mine collapse” survives. A paragraph about the collapse is harder for the model to use.
- Put in what only moves one way. Deaths, promises, betrayals, injuries, things lost. These do the most damage when they are forgotten, because the character will happily undo them.
- Pin moments, write summaries. Pin a message when the exact words matter — a confession, a vow, a name. Write a Story Memory note when what matters is the result, not the wording.
- Tidy it. When a plot thread ends, remove it. A memory full of finished business competes with what is happening now.
- Keep your persona separate. Who you are belongs in your persona. What has happened to you belongs in Story Memory. If you edit your persona every time something happens in a story, that change appears in every other chat too. See Character.AI personas.
Clearing out a bad pattern
Memory is also about what you remove. Character.AI’s Creator Guide gives a trick that works for players too: if a phrase keeps repeating, “hold down on the response and tap edit or remove. Removing that message pulls it from the active context and breaks the pattern for the rest of this chat.”
The same goes for a reply that got a fact wrong. If you leave a wrong fact in the chat, the character reads it again on every turn and it starts to look true. Correct or remove it early.
When the Character Still Forgets
Work down this list.
- Is the fact in Story Memory or pinned? If not, it is in the part of the chat that can be compressed. Pin it or write it in.
- Is it a new chat? Memory does not carry over, except Facts on c.ai+ when you choose to copy them.
- Did your chat style change? On lite, running out of premium messages moves you to the free style mid-chat.
- Is the memory full of old business? Finished plot threads and duplicate notes crowd out what matters now. Tidy it.
- Does the character’s own Definition contradict it? The Creator Guide warns that when user memory “arrives on top of guesswork”, the character “starts contradicting itself”. Some characters are simply written loosely. A better-written character holds memory better.
- Is it the character, or all characters? If every chat forgets at once, it may be a model or service problem rather than memory. The Creator Guide says occasional context loss “can be model-level or even temporary serving issues”.

Why does Character.AI forget things even with memory? Usually because the fact was never pinned or written into Story Memory, so it sat in the part of the chat that gets compressed as the conversation grows. Other common causes are starting a new chat, since memory does not carry over on the free plan, and switching chat style, for example when a lite account runs out of premium messages. A loosely written character can also contradict its own memory.
Does Character.AI memory carry over to a new chat? Not by default. Memory belongs to one chat. On c.ai+, when you start a new chat with a character, you get the option to copy Facts into the new chat, so the character keeps what it learned about you. On the free plan, copy any important Story Memory notes into the new chat by hand.
Can I edit Character.AI memories? Yes. You can edit Story Memory notes and, on c.ai+, edit, disable or add Facts. Pinned messages are different: the app asks you to unpin a message before you can edit it, then you can pin it again. Messages in group chats cannot be edited at all.
What happened to Chat Memories on Character.AI? Chat Memories, the 400-character text box Character.AI added for everyone in May 2025, was part of an earlier version of its memory system.
