Chub AI is the other big character-card platform — the direct competitor to Janitor AI, with an enormous community library and more model flexibility than almost anyone. The catch is everything around that library: the experience is unstructured, the interface looks and feels amateurish, and the hosted model quality is inconsistent. How It Works

Chub AI is a character-card repository with a chat platform attached. Users upload and browse character cards in the open format shared across the space — the same cards that run on Janitor AI or SillyTavern — and can chat with them directly on the site, either on Chub’s own hosted models or by connecting an external model through an API key or OpenRouter. Lorebooks and heavy card customization are supported, and the community pushes the format hard: plenty of “characters” here are really full scenarios, worlds, or plots wearing a character card as a container.

What It Does Well

• Flexibility. Cards, lorebooks, presets, and prompt-level customization are all open to you — closer to SillyTavern’s configurability than Character.AI’s walled garden.
• Extensive model support. In-house hosted models to start with zero setup, plus bring-your-own-model through standard APIs and OpenRouter. Few platforms cover both ends.
• The card ecosystem. One of the largest open catalogues anywhere, portable in both directions, with creators who stretch cards into entire worlds and plots.

Where It Falls Down

• No structure. The platform hands you a huge pile of cards and models and leaves the rest to you — no onboarding, no guided experience, nothing shaping a session into more than raw chat.
• Lack of polish. The interface looks amateurish next to any mainstream competitor, and basic flows feel unfinished.
• Inconsistent model quality. The hosted models swing between serviceable and poor; a good session depends heavily on which model you’re on and how it’s configured.
• Not intuitive. Settings, presets, and model configuration are confusing for newcomers — this is the rare platform that’s harder to start with than the power-user tools it resembles.

Free to browse and chat, with paid subscriptions unlocking its stronger hosted models and perks. Bring-your-own-model costs whatever your API provider charges, so the practical cost depends more on which model you run than on Chub’s own tiers.

Verdict

Chub AI’s library and flexibility are genuinely first-rate, and if the question is “where do I find cards,” it’s a strong answer. But as a place to actually play, it trails everything it competes with: Janitor AI does hosted character chat with more polish, and SillyTavern rewards the same tinkering with far more power.
