AI Dungeon vs ChatGPT (2026): Which Is Better for an AI RPG?

AI Dungeon is a dedicated platform for open-ended AI stories, and ChatGPT is a general chatbot that becomes an RPG when you give it a prompt or a Custom GPT. On our seven axes, AI Dungeon scores 2.6, the best ChatGPT game we have scored ties it at 2.6, and the average ChatGPT game scores 2.35.

That is a closer result than most people expect. It is also a result from data, not opinion: we score games, and we have scored six ChatGPT Custom GPT games with the same methodology as AI Dungeon. This page compares them axis by axis, and tells you which to pick for the kind of evening you want.

One limit first. We score games and platforms, not raw models. “ChatGPT” below means a ChatGPT game: a Custom GPT or a prompt that sets up the rules and the story. We have not scored a plain, unprompted chat with ChatGPT, because there is no game there to score. For how the models themselves differ, see ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for roleplay.

If you only read one line: AI Dungeon if you want to do anything and have tools to keep the story straight, a ChatGPT game if you want rules and stats and already have the account.

What Each One Is

AI Dungeon, made by Latitude, is the product that established the genre in 2019. You type what you do and the AI writes what happens, in any genre you can describe. It has no hard-coded rules unless a scenario’s author scripts them. It has a library of community scenarios, and it runs a roster of models, including its own finetunes and third-party ones; which are available depends on your plan. Our AI Dungeon review has the full account, and our model guide sorts the models.

A ChatGPT RPG is a Custom GPT or a prompt. A Custom GPT bundles instructions and knowledge files into a shareable game that loads the same way each session, and the GPT Store is the largest library of ready-made ones anywhere. Our guide to ChatGPT RPGs explains how they work, and the best ChatGPT RPG games lists the ones worth trying.

So the comparison is not model against model. It is a purpose-built platform against a general tool with a game laid on top.

Player Agency: AI Dungeon’s Clearest Win

AI Dungeon scores Player Agency — 4. The ChatGPT games average 2.5, and the best of them, Solo RPG Master, scores 3. This is the widest gap on the table.

Player Agency measures two failures. Puppeting is when the game writes your character’s actions or words for you. Railroading is when the world steers you back to the path it had in mind.

AI Dungeon accepts almost anything you bring it. A ChatGPT game is built on a prompt that has a story to run, and ChatGPT is a model that wants to help move that story along, so it leans toward steering. Three of the six ChatGPT games score 3 or better on this axis, and none scores 4. The cost of AI Dungeon’s freedom is that the AI accepts everything, which is the next section.

Fairness and Mechanics: ChatGPT’s Edge Is Small

Both sit at the bottom of the board here. AI Dungeon scores Mechanical Depth — 2 and Determinism & Fairness — 2. The ChatGPT games average 2.0 and 2.33.

AI Dungeon scores 2 because there is nothing there. It has no rules unless a scenario’s author scripts some, and the AI decides every outcome. The usual failure is a narrator that agrees with whatever you say. Our guide to difficulty in AI RPGs explains why that makes winning meaningless.

The ChatGPT games score about the same because a prompt is a weak rulebook. Our ChatGPT guide notes that ChatGPT manages bookkeeping such as inventory, currency and stats cleanly. In our scoring that bought a little: the games average 2.33 on fairness, and Deep Saga and 8-Bit Kingdoms both score 3. But a rule that lives only in a prompt degrades on the same curve as everything else in the conversation. Solo RPG Master, the most-played ChatGPT game, has stats that fade over a long session. Our guide to why AI RPGs cannot do mechanics explains the architecture behind that.

If you want rules that hold, neither of these is the answer. Platforms with a rules layer outside the model score higher, and our ranking shows them.

Memory: AI Dungeon’s Tools Against a Single Conversation

AI Dungeon scores Memory & Continuity — 3. The ChatGPT games average 2.17. Five of the six score 2, and only Solo RPG Master reaches 3.

AI Dungeon’s memory is a context window, and it is limited in the way every context window is. What helps is that it gives you tools to manage it: Story Cards, Plot Essentials, an Author’s Note and a Memory Bank, and it lets you see what the AI was sent. A ChatGPT game keeps everything in one conversation. A Custom GPT’s instructions and knowledge file load every session, which helps with lore, but the story itself is in the conversation and hits the same wall. Our guide to why AI campaigns forget covers the turn-50 problem.

Neither holds a long campaign without help. AI Dungeon gives you more of the help.

Characters: Close

AI Dungeon scores NPC Fidelity — 3 and the ChatGPT games average 2.67. Four of the six score 3, and our Isekai RPG review praises its deep NPCs. For ChatGPT in the game master’s seat, our guide says its prose is competent and clear but rarely as authored-feeling as Claude’s. In practice this is the closest axis: if you play for the people, the prompt and the model matter more than the platform.

Longevity and Design: Where ChatGPT Surprises

Longevity. AI Dungeon scores Longevity — 2, and the ChatGPT games average 2.0, but Solo RPG Master and Vantiel both reach 3. A single ChatGPT game can outlast AI Dungeon, if its prompt is well built. The weak ones, 8-Bit Kingdoms and Isekai RPG, score 1.

Signature Design. AI Dungeon scores Signature Design — 2, and the ChatGPT games average 2.83, the best axis for them. That is because several have an idea of their own: 8-Bit Kingdoms ages and replaces your ruler every five years, and Isekai RPG has an original world with tactical combat and beast taming. AI Dungeon invented the genre, and that counts for history. What the Custom GPT format gives you is a way to ship a single strange idea.

What Each One Costs

AI Dungeon has a free tier with no turn limit. Its paid plans run from $14.99 to $99.99 a month on our entry, and what the money buys is better models and more context, not more play. Check the plan on its website before subscribing in an app: its top tiers are web-only. Our guide to AI Dungeon’s free tier has the details.

ChatGPT has a free account that can run a basic roleplay session. Where it matters is persistence: our ChatGPT guide notes that you need ChatGPT Plus to create a Custom GPT, the container that keeps a game’s instructions active across sessions. Playing a game someone else built is a separate question, and what your plan allows is OpenAI’s to say, so check it before you rely on it. We do not quote OpenAI’s prices here, because they change; check its site.

The difference in shape is the point. AI Dungeon charges for the quality of the model. ChatGPT charges for the account, and the game on top is usually free to try. If you already pay for ChatGPT, trying a ChatGPT game costs nothing more. If you do not, AI Dungeon’s free tier is the cheaper place to start.

Images, Content Rules and Where to Play

Pictures. ChatGPT’s image generation is built in, so a Custom GPT can show you a location or a character mid-session. AI Dungeon lets you spend credits on generated images. Our guide to AI RPGs with images compares the options.

Content rules. Both have rules. Our ChatGPT guide notes that ChatGPT’s guardrails are the strictest of the three major models, so it is more likely to soften or break character on heavy material. For AI Dungeon, see whether it is safe. If a dark tone is central to your game, check the rules of whichever you choose before you build around it.

Where to play. AI Dungeon plays in a browser, has iPhone and Android apps and a Steam version. ChatGPT plays in its own web and phone apps. Neither needs more than a phone and an account.

What About Claude, Gemini and Grok?

People search for AI Dungeon against each of them, and the answer is much the same as for ChatGPT: they are general models that become an RPG when you give them a prompt, and the game is only as good as that prompt. We have scored prompt games on other models too. Valkyrie’s Biggest Gig, a prompt for Claude, scores 2.3, and the two Gemini prompts we have scored, Burning Sun V2 and Realm & Companion, score 2.1 and 1.9. Across all twelve prompt games we have scored, the average is 2.17. Our guides to Claude, Gemini and Grok explain how each behaves as a game master.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose AI Dungeon if:

  • You want to do anything, in any genre, and be left alone to do it.
  • You want tools to manage memory, and to see what the AI was sent.
  • You want to play for free without counting turns, and without an account elsewhere.
  • You want a library of community scenarios to start from.

Choose a ChatGPT game if:

  • You want stats, an inventory and rules written into the game.
  • You want a single strange idea, such as a dynasty that ages every five years.
  • You already have a ChatGPT account and want to try something at no extra cost.
  • You want pictures built in.

A simple test: do you want a story machine or a game in a chat? If you want to write a story with an AI, AI Dungeon. If you want to play a specific game someone designed, find a Custom GPT.

If Neither One Fits

Both lose their points on what a long campaign needs. Neither scores above 3 on Memory, and neither scores above 3 on Fairness. If you want structure with a memory that lasts, that exists higher on our board: Voyage, made by AI Dungeon’s own studio, has dice and permadeath, and Old Greg’s Tavern is a persistent campaign. AI Dungeon alternatives covers the field, and the platform comparison table sorts everything on our board by any axis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI Dungeon better than ChatGPT?

AI Dungeon scores 2.6 on our seven axes, and the average ChatGPT game we have scored scores 2.35, so on average yes, but the best ChatGPT game, Solo RPG Master, ties it at 2.6. AI Dungeon is ahead on Player Agency and Memory. ChatGPT games are ahead on Signature Design and slightly on fairness. It depends which game you compare.

Can ChatGPT replace AI Dungeon?

For many players, yes, if you use a Custom GPT built for it, and it costs nothing extra if you already have an account. You lose AI Dungeon’s tools for managing memory, such as Story Cards and an Author’s Note, and the agency it scores 4 for, and you gain rules and stats that a prompt can hold for a while.

Is ChatGPT free for roleplay?

A free ChatGPT account can run a basic roleplay session. Our ChatGPT guide notes that creating a Custom GPT, the container that keeps a game’s instructions active across sessions, needs ChatGPT Plus. What your plan allows for playing someone else’s GPT is OpenAI’s to say, so check it before you rely on it.

Which has better memory, AI Dungeon or ChatGPT?

AI Dungeon, 3 against an average of 2.17 for the six ChatGPT games we have scored. AI Dungeon gives you Story Cards, Plot Essentials, an Author’s Note and a Memory Bank, and shows you what the AI was sent. A ChatGPT game keeps the story in one conversation. Neither holds a long campaign without help.

Which has more freedom, AI Dungeon or ChatGPT?

AI Dungeon. It scores 4 on Player Agency and the ChatGPT games average 2.5. A ChatGPT game is built on a prompt that has a story to run, so it leans toward steering. AI Dungeon accepts almost anything, which is its strength and its fairness problem.

What AI does AI Dungeon use?

It runs a roster of models, including its own finetunes and third-party ones, and which are available depends on your plan. Our model guide sorts them by playstyle.

Are Claude and Gemini better than ChatGPT for an RPG?

They are different. Our guides find Claude writes with more literary depth and Gemini has a much larger context window, and ChatGPT has the biggest library of ready-made games and built-in images. The prompt games we have scored on Claude and Gemini average 2.1, close to the ChatGPT ones, so the game matters more than the model.
