Access disclosure: the developers of AI Game Master gave us free access for our re-review of it. No conditions were attached to our coverage, and this comparison is independent and unpaid.

AI Dungeon and AI Game Master look alike in a store listing and play very differently: AI Dungeon is an open story with no rules that you can take into any genre, and AI Game Master is a phone game built around a hero, a party and a main quest, with a shorter shelf life.

Their overall scores are 2.6 and 2.3. Five of the seven axes are tied or within a point, so the number hides how different they feel. The differences are on Player Agency, where AI Dungeon is far ahead, and on Signature Design, where AI Game Master is. This page walks through both.

There is also a history worth knowing. We first reviewed AI Game Master at 1 out of 5, as a thin clone of AI Dungeon. It has been rebuilt since, and the 2.3 below comes from a full re-test in July 2026, not an adjustment of the old score.

If you only read one line: AI Dungeon if you want to do anything and be left alone, AI Game Master if you want a companion and a quest log on your phone, and neither for a long campaign.

What Each One Is

AI Dungeon, made by Latitude, is the product that established the genre in 2019. It is an interactive story generator: you type what you do, and the AI writes what happens, in any genre you can describe. It has no hard-coded rules, no dice and no character sheet unless a scenario’s author scripts them. It plays in a browser and has iPhone and Android apps, and our AI Dungeon review has the full account.

AI Game Master is a mobile text RPG for iPhone and Android, published by Digital Dynasty Entertainment. You create a hero, pick a genre from dark fantasy to science fiction, and an AI game master narrates the adventure with generated scene art beside the prose. Play is metered in tokens, one per turn. It has stats, skills and an inventory, and since our first look it has gained three real systems: items generated as you play, a quest log that tracks objectives on a screen, and party members. Our AI Game Master review explains the rebuild.

So they are different kinds of product. AI Dungeon asks you to write a story with an AI. AI Game Master asks you to play a run: a hero, a party, a main quest and the end of a chapter.

Player Agency: The Widest Gap

AI Dungeon scores Player Agency — 4. AI Game Master scores Player Agency — 2. This is the widest gap on the table.

Player Agency measures two failures. Puppeting is when the game writes your character’s actions or words for you. Railroading is when the world steers you back to the path it had in mind.

AI Dungeon accepts almost anything you bring it, and that is the source of its 4. You can do what you want, in the order you want. The cost is that the AI will accept it too, which we cover under fairness.

AI Game Master is organised around a main quest, and a run ends when the quest is cleared. Our review does not break its agency score into puppeting and railroading, so we will not guess at which of the two costs it the points. The table says what matters: if being left alone to play your own character is what you want most, AI Dungeon is far ahead. Our guide to player agency in AI RPGs explains the axis.

Mechanics and Fairness: A Tie at 2, for Opposite Reasons

Both score Mechanical Depth — 2 and Determinism & Fairness — 2. The match is on paper only.

AI Dungeon scores 2 because there is nothing there. It has no rules unless a scenario’s author scripts some, and the AI decides every outcome. There is no layer to be unfair, because there is no layer. The usual failure is a narrator that agrees with whatever you say, and a game where nothing can be lost is a game where nothing is won. Our guide to difficulty in AI RPGs explains why this is the most common failure in the category.

AI Game Master scores 2 because the layer it added does not work. It has the right shapes for a game: generated items, a quest log, party members. The trouble is that the items are close to useless in our play. Some do nothing they claim to do, and some duplicate themselves. An inventory that generates freely and resolves badly is worse than no inventory, because the game keeps inviting you to plan around objects that will not behave. That is a determinism failure, not a content failure.

Same number, different prospects. AI Dungeon’s score would change if it added mechanics. AI Game Master’s would change if the mechanics it already has started to work. Our guide to mechanics in AI RPGs shows what the platforms that get this right do differently.

Memory and Characters: Level on the Page

Both score Memory & Continuity — 3 and NPC Fidelity — 3.

Memory. AI Dungeon’s memory is a context window, and ours was limited in the way every context window is. It gives you tools to manage it: Story Cards, Plot Essentials, an Author’s Note and a Memory Bank, and it lets you see what the AI was sent. AI Game Master has a standard context window. Neither is good enough for a long campaign, and neither is the worst on our board. For why this limit is built into the technology, see why AI campaigns forget.

Characters. This is where AI Game Master is strongest, and it ties anyway. When you pick up a party member they hold a consistent voice and their own way of responding, and they do not sound like a second narrator wearing a name. That is the hardest thing on its list of new features to get right, and it is the one it most clearly does. AI Dungeon has no party system: its characters are whatever the story and the model introduce, and we scored them the same 3.

If you play for the people you meet, AI Game Master gives you someone to come back to. If you play for the story you are making up, AI Dungeon does not need them.

Longevity: Why the Rebuilt One Ends First

AI Dungeon scores Longevity — 2. AI Game Master scores Longevity — 1.

AI Dungeon fades in the usual way. Without a system underneath, the world is regenerated as you go, and over dozens of sessions it loses the thread.

AI Game Master ends for a different reason: it is priced to end. A run is organised around a main quest, and when you clear it the chapter ends. If you want to keep the same story going into a new chapter, that costs more than starting a new story from nothing. Every incentive in the economy points at abandoning your character, and the only way to stay longer inside a chapter is to avoid the content the game is built around. It does not break down after fifty turns. It is designed to stop.

We verified that pricing in July 2026. If the studio changes it, this axis will change with it. For either one, the advice is the same: if you want a story that holds for months, our ranking for long campaigns is the place to look.

Signature Design: AI Game Master’s Win

AI Game Master scores Signature Design — 3 and AI Dungeon scores Signature Design — 2.

AI Dungeon invented the idea of the genre, and that counts for history rather than for design today: it is a text box and a story. AI Game Master has generated scene art next to the prose, a quest log on screen, and a party. It is the more produced of the two, and the party is the part that is most its own. It is also the larger app on a phone: its iPhone build is about 253 MB, against 4.7 MB for AI Dungeon’s, which is a thin shell around the website. Our apps guide explains what that size gap means.

What Each One Costs

AI Dungeon has a free tier with no turn limit. Its paid plans on our entry run from $14.99 to $99.99 a month, and what the money buys is better models and more context, not more play. If you subscribe, check the plan on its website: its top tiers are web-only, and a subscription bought through an app store has to be cancelled before you can take one. Our guide to AI Dungeon’s free tier has the details.

AI Game Master sells tokens, and one token pays for one turn. The packs, verified in the app in July 2026 on a European account, cost:

PackCostPer turn
25 tokens€1.09about €0.044
150 tokens€5.49about €0.037
350 tokens€10.99about €0.031

The free tier is topped up with complimentary tokens and an invite-a-friend bonus. A subscription is offered in the app, but the store screen did not show its price, so we do not quote one. Regional prices may differ.

So the two charge in opposite ways. AI Dungeon charges for quality: the turns are free, and the money goes on a better model. AI Game Master charges for the turn itself, a few cents each, and charges most of all for continuing a finished story. If you play a lot, AI Dungeon is far cheaper. If you play a little, a pack of AI Game Master tokens is a fixed, small bill. Our guide to what AI RPGs cost compares the pricing styles across the field.

Where to Play

Both are on the App Store and Google Play. On the App Store, read on 25 August 2026, AI Dungeon had 4.38 stars from 26,595 ratings and AI Game Master had 4.67 from 5,531. AI Dungeon is rated 12+ on Apple and Teen on Google Play, and AI Game Master 12+ and Everyone 10+. AI Dungeon also plays in a browser, and has a Steam version. AI Game Master’s web version was listed as in development when we re-tested it, so check the studio’s site if you want to play on a computer.

A store rating measures the first session and our score measures the fiftieth turn, which is why the apps with the best store ratings are not our best-scored ones.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose AI Dungeon if:

  • You want to do anything, in any genre, and be left alone to do it.
  • You want to play for free without counting turns.
  • You play on a computer as well as a phone.
  • You are happy to write the rules yourself, or have none.

Choose AI Game Master if:

  • You want a companion who sounds like a person.
  • You want a quest log, and a main quest to finish.
  • You play on your phone, in short self-contained runs.
  • You are happy to start a new story when a chapter ends.

A simple test: do you want to write a story or play a run? If you want to write, AI Dungeon. If you want to play, AI Game Master, for as long as a quest lasts.

If Neither One Fits

Both lose their points on what a long campaign needs. Neither scores above 3 on Memory, and neither scores above 2 on Fairness. If you want structure with a memory that lasts, that exists higher on our board. Voyage, made by AI Dungeon’s own studio, has dice and permadeath. Old Greg’s Tavern is a persistent campaign that does not end when a quest does. For the rules-heavy version of the same idea on a phone, see Everweave vs AI Game Master, and AI Dungeon alternatives covers the field. The platform comparison table sorts everything on our board by any axis.

Checklist

  • Want freedom and a free tier? AI Dungeon.
  • Want a companion and a quest log? AI Game Master.
  • Not fantasy? Either. AI Game Master lists genres from dark fantasy to science fiction, and AI Dungeon plays any genre you describe.
  • On AI Game Master, do not clear the main quest if you want to keep playing the same chapter, and check the price of continuing before you buy tokens.
  • On AI Dungeon, check the plan on its website before subscribing in an app.
  • Want rules and a strong memory? Look higher on the board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI Dungeon or AI Game Master better?

AI Dungeon scores a little higher on our seven-axis methodology, 2.6 against 2.3 for AI Game Master, but they are built for different players. AI Dungeon is ahead on Player Agency and Longevity. If you want a companion and a quest log on your phone, choose AI Game Master.

Is AI Game Master like AI Dungeon?

It started that way. We first reviewed it at 1 out of 5 as a thin clone of AI Dungeon. It has been rebuilt since with generated items, a quest log and party members, and now plays like a short mobile RPG built around a main quest. AI Dungeon is still an open story with no built-in rules.

Which has better memory, AI Dungeon or AI Game Master?

They tie, 3 on Memory and Continuity. AI Dungeon gives you Story Cards, Plot Essentials, an Author’s Note and a Memory Bank to manage a limited context window. AI Game Master has a standard context window. Neither holds a long campaign without help.

Is AI Game Master free like AI Dungeon?

Not in the same way. AI Dungeon’s free tier has no turn limit. AI Game Master charges one token a turn. Its free tier is topped up with complimentary tokens and an invite-a-friend bonus, and token packs in July 2026 cost about 3 to 4 euro cents a turn.

Which has better characters, AI Dungeon or AI Game Master?

They tie at 3 on NPC Fidelity, by different routes. AI Game Master has party members who hold a consistent voice and their own way of responding. AI Dungeon has no party system, so its characters are whatever the story and the model introduce.

Why does AI Game Master score lower on Longevity?

Can I play AI Dungeon and AI Game Master on my phone?
