AI Dungeon vs AI Realm (2026): Free-Form Story or D&D 5e Rules?
AI Dungeon and AI Realm sit at opposite ends of the same hobby: AI Dungeon is a story with no rules that you can take anywhere, and AI Realm is D&D 5e run for you by a machine, with real dice and a short memory.
Their overall scores are close, 2.6 and 2.3. Their score sheets are almost mirror images. Each one is strong exactly where the other is weak, so the choice is less about which is better and more about which kind of evening you want.
One note on dates. AI Realm released a version 2 in 2026 and reworked its plans. The prices on this page were read from its pricing page on 14 September 2026, and the scores are the ones published on our directory entry.

If you only read one line: AI Realm for a short game of real D&D, AI Dungeon for everything else.
What Each One Is
AI Dungeon, made by Latitude, started this category in 2019. You pick a scenario from a large library or start from nothing, choose a model, and play a story in any genre. There is no character sheet and there are no dice unless a scenario’s author adds them with scripts. What it gives you is a set of tools for telling the AI what to keep in mind. Our review covers it in full.
AI Realm is built on the 5th Edition Systems Reference Document, the open part of the D&D 5e rules. It works as a character sheet and a narrator in one. You build a character from 12 classes and 9 races with a 27-point-buy system for ability scores. Then you type what you do. The system rolls the checks that are needed against a Difficulty Class set by the AI, and the AI narrates the outcome, with generated pictures of the scene. The numbers are handled by code and the prose is handled by the AI. Our AI Realm review covers it in full.
That last point is the heart of the difference. On most AI story platforms, AI Dungeon included, the language model does everything, which means it can quietly forget that you are out of spell slots. On AI Realm, the code keeps the count.
Rules and Dice: AI Realm’s Lead
AI Realm scores Mechanical Depth — 4. AI Dungeon scores Mechanical Depth — 2.
AI Realm’s 4 is among the highest on our board. Only two platforms score above it. If what you want is 5e run faithfully, with rules that are enforced and not just narrated around, very little else comes close. In our play, running a Fighter into a goblin ambush and watching the system roll initiative, track hit points across several enemies and narrate each exchange felt closer to a real table than most alternatives. Spell slots, attack rolls and saving throws all work as a 5e player expects.
The cost of that focus is that the whole system is tied to D&D mechanics. There is no way to run science fiction, horror or a ruleset of your own.
AI Dungeon has no mechanical layer by default. Your character has no sheet, and a fight is a few paragraphs of prose. A scenario’s author can build mechanics with scripting, and some scenarios do. Most adventures run without any.
If you already know D&D, AI Realm’s learning curve is close to zero, and its character builder is one of the best parts of it. If you have never played a tabletop game and do not want to learn one, AI Dungeon asks nothing of you.
Fairness: A Smaller Lead for AI Realm
AI Realm scores Determinism & Fairness — 3. AI Dungeon scores Determinism & Fairness — 2.
Fairness asks whether what you get is earned. On AI Dungeon, with no rules underneath, the storyteller decides whether your sword blow lands, and a storyteller tends to decide in your favour. As our review puts it, when the world accommodates everything, succeeding at something feels much like the platform simply agreeing with you.
On AI Realm a die is rolled in code, so the outcome of an attack is not the narrator’s to give away. That is worth a point. It is not worth more, on our scoring, and both platforms sit well below the top of this axis. Our guide to difficulty in AI RPGs explains what the platforms at the top do differently.
Memory: AI Dungeon’s Lead, and the Widest Gap
AI Dungeon scores Memory & Continuity — 3. AI Realm scores Memory & Continuity — 1.
This is the axis that decides how long a game can last, and it is where AI Realm breaks.
AI Realm’s 1 is the joint-lowest memory score on our board. In the first few sessions the game is impressive. In longer play, the small errors add up: characters met earlier start behaving inconsistently, a plotline that had moved forward quietly resets, and rules that were applied correctly at the start are mishandled later. None of these is a disaster alone. Together they are what ends a campaign.
Our review said it this way: you are not fighting shallow design here, you are watching excellent design forget what it just did. A ruleset this good cannot build on itself across a campaign the platform does not remember.
AI Realm’s plans do include tools that bear on this. Its pricing page lists a notes limit, from 70,000 characters on the free plan to 150,000 on the top plan, and a number of NPC cards per chat, from 25 to 200. Paid plans from Platinum up keep full chat history for nine months.
AI Dungeon forgets too. On the free tier most models read about 4,000 tokens, which is roughly 3,000 words of story, instructions and notes together. What earns it the higher score is the set of tools it gives the player:
- Plot Essentials holds what is always true, and is sent on every turn.
- Story Cards hold notes about people and places, and are sent when a trigger word appears.
- Author’s Note is a short reminder placed right before your latest action.
- The Memory Bank stores memories of what has happened: 25 for each adventure on the free tier, up to 800 on the top tier.
It also lets you press the last response and choose View Context to see exactly what the AI was sent. Our guides to Story Cards and to AI Instructions, Plot Essentials and Author’s Note show how to use them.
Longevity follows from memory. AI Dungeon scores 2 and AI Realm scores 1. Neither is strong. AI Realm’s score is held down by the same failure as its memory: depth that is forgotten does not add up, it resets.
For why every AI game has this limit, see why LLMs forget.
Freedom: AI Dungeon’s Other Lead
AI Dungeon scores Player Agency — 4. AI Realm scores Player Agency — 2.
AI Dungeon’s 4 is one of the highest on our board. Type something absurd and it goes with you. Its reputation was built on strange, dreamlike stories that went somewhere no designer planned, and the game’s refusal to step in is what allowed them.
AI Realm is two points behind. It also limits you in a plainer way, apart from the score: your character is a 5e character in a fantasy world. A player who wants to be a dragon-riding space pirate has come to the wrong game, and a player who wants to be a third-level Rogue has come to the right one.
Our guide to player agency in AI RPGs explains what this axis measures.
Characters and Design: Level
Both score NPC Fidelity — 3. AI Realm’s characters are helped by its writing. It narrates well, and good narration carries characters further than the system behind them would alone. AI Dungeon writes characters as part of a world, which serves the story and rarely produces someone you remember.
Both score Signature Design — 2.
What Each One Costs
AI Dungeon does not sell play. Its free tier has no turn limit. Latitude’s help centre says: “AI Dungeon is a free-to-play game, no matter what device you’re playing on”. The free tier listed nine story models on 2 October 2026. Paying buys more models and a larger context:
| Wanderer | Journey | Legend | Mythic | Ultimate | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price per month | Free | $14.99 | $29.99 | $49.99 | $99.99 |
| Story models | 9 | 20 | 21 | 22 | 22 |
| Headline context | up to 4k | up to 8k | up to 16k | up to 32k | up to 32k on DeepSeek |
From AI Dungeon’s membership page, read on 2 October 2026. Our membership guide has the detail.
AI Realm sells messages, pictures, voice and room for notes. From its pricing page, read on 14 September 2026:
| Plan | Monthly cost | Messages per month | Images and voice | Campaign hosting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not listed on the pricing page | Character portrait at creation | Not listed |
| Bronze | $7.99 | 500, including 250 premium | 15 images, 25k TTS characters | Not listed |
| Platinum | $14.99 | Unlimited, including 700 premium | 40 images, 60k TTS characters | Up to 3 players |
| Emerald | $24.99 | Unlimited, including 1,500 premium | 80 images, 120k TTS characters | Up to 5 players |
| Obsidian | $49.99 | Unlimited, including 2,000 premium | 120 images, 150k TTS characters | Up to 5 players |
AI Realm notes that its unlimited plans “may have reasonable limits to prevent bots and spam.” Monthly allowances reset on the renewal date and do not roll over.
Reading the two together:
- To play free for a whole evening, AI Dungeon is the safe choice, since its free play is not rationed. AI Realm’s free plan is enough to try the system.
- At $14.99 a month the two meet. On AI Dungeon that price buys 20 models and up to 8k of context. On AI Realm it buys the first plan with unlimited messages, plus 40 images and hosting for three players.
- AI Realm’s cheapest plan, at $7.99, is capped at 500 messages a month. For regular play, Platinum is the realistic starting point.
- AI Dungeon’s top plan costs twice AI Realm’s.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose AI Realm if:
- You know D&D 5e, or want to learn it, and want the rules kept for you.
- You want real dice and a real character sheet.
- You plan a one-shot or a short arc, not a campaign of many months.
- You want generated pictures of the scene as you play, on a paid plan.
Choose AI Dungeon if:
- You want any genre, not only fantasy.
- You do not want rules, classes or dice.
- You want to play free with no limit on turns.
- You want a story to last longer, and are willing to use Plot Essentials and Story Cards.
A simple test: do you want to build a character sheet before you start? If that sounds like the fun part, AI Realm. If it sounds like homework, AI Dungeon.
If Neither One Fits
The gap in this comparison is easy to name. AI Realm has the rules and loses the memory. AI Dungeon has more memory and no rules. A player who wants both, 5e-style play that lasts a whole campaign, will be let down by each.
That combination exists higher on our board. AI Realm vs Friends & Fables compares AI Realm with a deeper tabletop platform, Voyage vs AI Dungeon covers Latitude’s own rules-based game, and our ranking for long campaigns sorts the field by how long a story holds. For tabletop play in general, see our AI D&D guide.
Checklist
- Want D&D 5e rules and dice? AI Realm.
- Want any genre and no rules? AI Dungeon.

- On AI Realm, plan for one-shots and short arcs.
- On AI Realm, skip the 500-message plan if you play often.
- On AI Dungeon, fill in Plot Essentials before a long story.
- Want deep rules and a strong memory together? Look higher on the board.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AI Dungeon or AI Realm better?
AI Dungeon scores a little higher on our seven-axis methodology, 2.6 against 2.3 for AI Realm, but they are built for different players. AI Dungeon is ahead on Memory, Player Agency and Longevity. AI Realm is ahead on Mechanical Depth and Fairness, and the two are level on characters and Signature Design. If you want D&D 5e rules with real dice for a short adventure, choose AI Realm. If you want a free-form story in any genre, or a story that lasts more than a few sessions, choose AI Dungeon.
Is AI Realm like AI Dungeon?
Only in that you type what you do and an AI narrates the result. AI Dungeon has no rules unless a scenario’s author scripts them, and the AI decides every outcome. AI Realm is built on the D&D 5e rules: you make a character with a class, a race and ability scores, and the system rolls checks, attacks and saving throws in code before the AI writes what happened. AI Dungeon plays any genre. AI Realm plays fantasy in the 5e ruleset and nothing else.
Which is better for playing D&D with an AI?
AI Realm, for a short game. It supports 12 classes, 9 races and point-buy ability scores, tracks spell slots, and handles initiative, attack rolls and saving throws for you. It scores 4 on Mechanical Depth against 2 for AI Dungeon. The limit is memory: AI Realm scores 1 on Memory and Continuity, so it suits one-shots and short arcs far better than a long campaign.
Which has better memory, AI Dungeon or AI Realm?
AI Dungeon, 3 against 1 on Memory and Continuity. This is the widest gap between them. AI Realm’s 1 is the joint-lowest memory score on our board, and in long play characters and plot threads stopped holding. AI Dungeon also forgets, and its free context is small, but it gives you Story Cards, Plot Essentials, an Author’s Note and a Memory Bank, and it lets you see exactly what the AI was sent.
Is AI Realm free like AI Dungeon?
Both have a free tier. AI Dungeon’s has no turn limit and nine story models. AI Realm’s pricing page, read on 14 September 2026, did not list how many messages the free plan includes. Its paid plans cost $7.99, $14.99, $24.99 and $49.99 a month, and the $7.99 plan is limited to 500 messages a month. AI Dungeon’s paid plans cost $14.99 to $99.99 a month and buy better models and more context, not more play.
Can I play science fiction or horror on AI Realm?
Not in any real sense. AI Realm is built on the D&D 5e rules, so its classes, spells and mechanics are fantasy ones. AI Dungeon plays any genre you can describe, which is one of the main reasons to choose it.
Do AI Dungeon and AI Realm have dice?
AI Realm does. Its system rolls the checks in code against a Difficulty Class set by the AI, and the AI then narrates the outcome. AI Dungeon has no dice built in. A scenario’s author can add mechanics with scripting, but most adventures run with the AI deciding what succeeds.
