AI Game Master

Substantially rebuilt — real party members, quest logs and generated items — but the items rarely work, and continuing a story costs more than starting over.

Best for: Short, self-contained mobile runs with a companion worth talking to — not long campaigns, which the pricing discourages. Last reviewed: July 2026

AI Game Master — Dungeon RPG is a mobile text RPG for iOS and Android (a web version is listed as in development): create a hero, pick a genre from dark fantasy through sci-fi, and an AI game master narrates the adventure with generated scene art alongside the prose. We first reviewed AI Game Master at 1/5, as a thin clone of AI Dungeon. It has been substantially rebuilt since, and the score above comes from a full re-test against our published methodology, not an adjustment of the old one.

How It Works

Play is metered in tokens, one token per turn. Characters carry stats, skills and inventory, and the platform has added three real systems since our first look: items generated as you play rather than left as narrative set-dressing, a quest log that tracks objectives on a screen instead of in the prose, and party members who read as people rather than a second narrator wearing a name.

Those additions move it out of the freeform-sandbox lane it used to share with AI Dungeon. There is an attempt at a game here now.

What It Does Best

The companions. When you pick up a party member they hold a consistent voice and their own way of responding — the hardest thing on that list to get right, and the one this platform most clearly does. It’s why NPC Fidelity and Signature Design both score 3 on a product that scores 2.3 overall.

Where It Breaks

The items are close to useless and sometimes broken: some do nothing they claim to, some duplicate outright. An inventory that generates freely but resolves unreliably is worse than no inventory, because the game keeps inviting you to plan around objects that won’t behave. That’s a determinism failure rather than a content one, and it holds Fairness to 2. Mechanical depth stays shallow for the same reason — generated items and a quest log are the shape of a game system, but depth requires the parts to interact predictably.

The structural problem is the chapter economy. A run is organised around a main quest; clear it and the chapter ends. Continuing that same story into a new chapter costs more than starting a fresh story from nothing — so every incentive points at abandoning your character, and the only way to extend a chapter is to deliberately avoid the content the game is built around. That, not turn-count decay, is why Longevity scores 1.

Pricing

Tokens are sold as consumable packs, and the free tier is topped up by complimentary tokens and an invite-a-friend bonus. Verified in-app, July 2026:

PackCostPer turn
25 Tokens€1.09~€0.044
150 Tokens€5.49~€0.037
350 Tokens€10.99~€0.031

A subscription is also offered in-app, but the store screen doesn’t display its price, so we’re not quoting one — check the app directly. Prices above were observed on a European account and regional pricing may differ.

Verdict

Substantially rebuilt since our first review, and no longer the thin AI Dungeon clone we panned. Generated items, a quest log, and party members who hold a genuine voice are real additions, and the companions are the best of them. But the items rarely do what they claim and sometimes duplicate outright, and the chapter economy charges more to continue a story than to abandon it and start fresh — so the platform ends exactly where a campaign should be getting interesting. A good direction, unfinished. 2.3 out of 5.
