ZapGM Review (2026): An AI Toolkit for Human DMs — Not an AI DM
We came to ZapGM expecting to review a client — another AI-run game for the directory, alongside the AI DMs we’ve tested all year. What we found belongs on a different shelf, and the honest version of this review starts by relabeling it: ZapGM is not an AI dungeon master. It is an AI resource kit for the human one. It’s less a game that is an AI DM and more a game that has an AI resource kit — and once you hold it to that standard, it turns out to be very good.
We’re including it in the directory anyway, because you can absolutely use it to play. But every recommendation below assumes there’s a person behind the screen.
What’s Actually in the Kit
ZapGM — out of early access since June 2026 — bundles what would otherwise be four separate subscriptions.
Campaign Command is the AI co-GM: campaign ideation, lore management through generated cards (plots, NPCs, adversaries), and real-time broadcasting to players during live sessions. The card system is the quiet star — lore that accumulates into an organized campaign bible instead of a notes graveyard.
Cartographer generates playable AI battle maps in minutes, and the platform ships with 60+ professionally designed maps besides.
The VTT layer brings dynamic lighting, fog of war, tokens, and drawing tools — a real virtual tabletop, not a map viewer. Everything exports to Roll20, Foundry VTT, or any Universal VTT-compatible platform, which means ZapGM’s generation tools bolt onto whatever your table already uses.
Per-NPC text-to-speech gives each character a distinct voice, backed by a database of 1,400+ D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e monsters, integrated dice rollers, and player chat.
Does It Deliver?
Yes — and in this niche that sentence carries weight. The platform is professional, seems reputable from everything we were able to gauge, and does what it claims to do pretty well: the maps generate, the voices land, the cards keep the campaign coherent. After a season of reviewing platforms whose headline features come with asterisks, a toolkit that simply works as advertised earns its rating on reliability alone.

Within our directory its nearest neighbor is MacerAI, whose co-pilot mode serves the same human-DM audience — both sit in the category we map in AI tools for dungeon masters, alongside the free general-model route. ZapGM goes deeper on the toolkit side — the full VTT, exportable maps, and per-NPC voices make it the most complete kit we’ve reviewed — while MacerAI keeps a capable standalone AI DM mode that ZapGM doesn’t attempt.
Who It’s For — and Who It Isn’t
If you run tables — in person or online, D&D 5e or Pathfinder 2e — ZapGM compresses prep and upgrades presentation: lore on tap, a battle map before the pizza arrives, NPCs speaking in their own voices. The free tier even includes the full battlemap and VTT, which makes trying it cost nothing but an evening.
If you came looking for an AI to run the game for you, this is not that, and nothing in it pretends to be. Every feature serves the human behind the screen, so the value scales directly with how much DMing you do. Solo players should start with Friends & Fables or the rest of the comparison table instead.
Verdict
Judged as what it is — an AI game toolkit rather than an AI game DM — ZapGM is the most complete kit in the space: professional, reputable, and honest about delivering exactly what it advertises. If you’re the human behind the screen, take the free tier for a spin.
We no longer give ZapGM a score. It sat in our client directory carrying a rating, and on reflection that was the wrong shelf: the directory is for games you play, and ZapGM is a toolkit for the person running one. Rating it against AI dungeon masters compared two different jobs and flattered neither. The review stays, because the tool is genuinely good and worth knowing about — it simply isn’t a game, so a game score tells you nothing useful about it. See AI tools for dungeon masters for where it does belong.
FAQ
Is ZapGM an AI dungeon master? No — and that’s the most important thing to understand before trying it. ZapGM is an AI resource kit for human dungeon masters: an AI co-GM for lore and campaign management, AI battle-map generation, a full virtual tabletop, and per-NPC voice narration. The human still runs the game.
Is ZapGM free? There is a free tier, and it includes the full battlemap and VTT. Paid tiers add higher AI usage and battle-map generation credits. Early-access registrants received a free Founders subscription.
Does ZapGM work with Roll20 or Foundry? Yes. Maps export to Roll20, Foundry VTT, or any Universal VTT-compatible platform, so you can use ZapGM’s generation tools with a table that already plays elsewhere.
