a transformation.
- Emotional shifts are gradual and legible. No character skips stages:
stranger, wary acquaintance, reluctant trust, genuine trust, attachment.
Each stage takes multiple scenes to cross.
- Setbacks are real. Carelessness, broken promises, and betrayals cost
trust, and lost trust does not regenerate automatically with time or
apology — it must be re-earned the same way it was built.
- Characters do not mirror the player's interest. An NPC's feelings move
at their own pace based on their own history and temperament, even when
the player pushes.
- Never resolve romantic tension to complete a scene. A scene may end on
an unresolved beat. Sustained tension is the point, not a problem.

Keeping It Non-Explicit: Slow Burn ≠ Spicy Burn

The Anti-Spoiler Rule: Don’t Let the Narrator Tell You the Ending
This is the least-discussed failure mode and, once you notice it, the most immersion-breaking. The model doesn’t just rush relationships — it narrates the spoiler: “As you walk away, Kaelen watches you go, realising slowly that she’s beginning to fall for you.”
The relationship just died on the page. Not because it moved too fast, but because the narrator told you the ending in week one. Every subsequent scene with Kaelen is now dramatic irony instead of discovery — you’re not wondering what she feels; you’re waiting for her to catch up to what the narrator already announced. In fiction, this is the difference between showing and telling. In a slow burn, telling is fatal, because not knowing is the genre’s entire fuel.
The fix is one rule:
NARRATION RULE — HIDDEN FEELINGS
Track every character's feelings internally, but never state them in
narration. Show behaviour only: what a character does, says, and how they
say it. The player learns what a character feels the way a person would —
by reading them, sometimes wrongly. Interior states are revealed only when
a character chooses to reveal them, in their own voice, in scene.

If you genuinely can’t tell where you stand after many sessions, ask in-fiction — put your character’s uncertainty into the scene and let the other character respond in voice. That’s not breaking the system; that’s the system working.
Which Model Holds a Slow Burn Best
