Tactical combat is there — full 5e with initiative, spells, conditions, and terrain, per the platform’s claims and consistent with what we played. Multiplayer for up to five friends is there. Persistent campaign memory is claimed. NPCs are pitched with distinct personality, speech, and motivation.

That is the right ambition, executed in the right shape. In a directory where true 5e rules engines are rare, a new one that plays like F&F in early sessions is worth attention — and at “free to start, Pro from $8.99/month,” it undercuts most of the structured-play field.

The Bright Spot: Creators Get Paid

The platform’s most genuinely distinctive idea is the marketplace: creators build, publish, and sell campaigns. Paying world-makers is rare in this niche — AI Dungeon has never done it, and in our directory only Hidden Door has a working answer to the same question. If AIDungeonMaster.ai delivers on it, serious adventure authors get a second real venue for compensated work, and that alone earns the platform a seat at the table.

A big signup figure for a gated product is already unverifiable; a public rating average for a closed platform is the kind of number that exists to be believed, not checked. We can’t call it false — that’s the point, nobody outside can call it anything — but it made us weary, and it should make you weary too.

And then there’s the name. AIDungeonMaster.ai sits one keystroke of confusion away from the best-known brand in this entire space, and the domain reads like it was optimized to collect AI Dungeon’s search traffic. Maybe that’s coincidence; “AI dungeon master” is also just the generic term (we’ve written a whole explainer on it). But combined with the unverifiable numbers, the pattern is a marketing posture that leans on borrowed credibility — and that’s the trust problem the rest of this verdict has to weigh.

Verdict

Judge the sessions alone and this platform is genuinely promising: the 5e engine is real, the F&F-shaped architecture is the right architecture, and the creator marketplace is an idea this niche badly needs more of. Judge the trust picture and it loses ground it didn’t have to lose: closed doors, unverifiable numbers, and a name that benefits from confusion.
